A new Wayfarer abuse policy

We know that Pokestop requests sent via Wayfarer are abused. This is something we have discussed in the past. Niantic’s Wayfarer Team, Ambassadors, and other Niantic employees have worked hard to combat abuse of Wayfarer. We find these harsh words, but they’re justified. Many Pokestops have low-quality and little contribution.

Niantic’s Explorer Community and Wayfarer Map are at the core of everything they do. They only invite players who are dedicated to the community. Abuse is therefore taken seriously.

The new Wayfarer Abuse Enforcement Ladder was announced to address this issue. The policy will come into effect when abuse of any kind is detected. The policy outlines what steps will be taken to suspend and warn the violator. It also outlines an official appeal procedure to reverse an illegal suspension.

New policy requires that punishments be proportional to the seriousness of the violation. The punishment increases gradually as the player continues to violate the rules. It also gives the player a chance to alter their behavior. This includes abuses that are in violation of Niantic’s Terms of Service and Player Guidelines, including:

  • Niantic Map: Sending false data
  • Promote hateful and harmful content
  • Unauthorized access is gained to Wayfarer backends or clients, for example by using add-ons or third-party software.

Ladder stage 1: Warning

You will then receive an alert email to the address you have associated with your Wayfarer account informing you of the unauthorized activity detected.

Ladder stage 2: Thirty-day suspension

You will receive an email to the email associated with your Wayfarer Account informing you of the illegal activity detected and the suspension of your account. Niantic will suspend your account for 30 days. You will receive a message indicating that your account is suspended as soon as you attempt to login.

Ladder trap 3: Ninety-day suspension

You will be notified via email that a violation has occurred on your account. Your account is then suspended. Then you will be banned from playing any Niantic game for 90 days. You will receive a message stating the suspension of your account as soon as you attempt to login.

Ladder Step 4: Ten-year suspension

You will be notified via email that there has been illegal activity detected in your Wayfarer account. Your account may also be suspended. Then you will be banned from playing any Niantic game for 3650 days. You will receive a message stating the suspension of your account as soon as you attempt to login.

Offenders, with the exception of those receiving ladder step 4, (the suspension for 10 years), will have a chance at improvement. They can begin again from scratch if they follow the rules for a year without violating them. The punishment for a new offense is not more severe because previous infractions are no longer taken into account.

You can, however, appeal the suspension if you feel it was unfair. After a thorough investigation, the appeal will be reviewed. The company warns that very few suspensions can be reversed due to their high-level detection system accuracy.
